Today was our first day building and testing our balloon cars. We had a few successes and a lot of failures, but that's OK! It's about the experience of trial and error. Many of the students figured about very quickly that their vehicles were too heavy. Adjustments will need to be made next week, but their minds are already working hard to find solutions to their problems. In a few weeks we will have race day! I hope to Facebook Live the race for everyone to see. Vrrrrroooommmmm!

The 5th and 6th graders enjoyed their time in the farm bus today. They learned about renewable and nonrenewable resources, they did an experiment with regular vs. soy based crayons, they learned about Michigan farmers and soybeans, and they made soy based lip balm. It was a fun experience!
The 5th-8th graders are currently doing a STEM unit on rockets. Today we created air powered rockets using party balloons. Each group needed to create a rocket and see how large of a payload (aka-paperclips) they could blast into space (aka-the ceiling). To keep the balloons launching straight, we suspended fishing line from the ceiling to the floor. The students then threaded the fishing line through a straw attached to their rocket. The class found out very quickly that their "cool" designs were too heavy and the weight of the rocket needed to be reduced in order to achieve a successful launch.
