On Thursday the 5/6th grade enjoyed a day at Weiss Farm in Frankenmuth. They learned about how a dairy farm operates, about the advances in technology on a dairy farm, and how weather affects the day to day lives of farmers. They also had an opportunity to race through the corn maze! God blessed us with a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed an awesome fun filled field trip.
The 5/6th graders had fun exploring the interesting properties of Oobleck today. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian liquid. It can act as both a solid and a liquid depending on how much pressure is applied to it. The class discovered that if they hit the Oobleck it acts like a solid, but if they put it gently in their hands it flows like a liquid. The class made a huge mess, but had a lot of fun learning about properties of matter.
I scream! You scream! We all scream for ice cream! Today the 7/8th graders finished up their science unit with a fun lab that explored changing states of matter. While making ice cream, the class learned how salt lowers the freezing point of water. The ice actually gets colder!!! Salt lowers the freezing point through a process called freezing point depression. When salted ice melts, the water can't refreeze as quickly anymore. As more ice melts, more heat is absorbed, bringing the temperature down even lower. This is perfect for freezing ice cream quickly.
