Mrs. Claus needed our help in class today. A sneaky little elf got into her kitchen and switched up all of her special baking powders. The class had to test five different mystery powders and write down their detailed observations in order to identify all of the powders.
Today in class the students experimented with Oobleck. Oobleck is what scientists call a Non-Newtonian liquid. Basically, Sir Issac Newton stated that individual liquids flow at consistent, predictable rates. As the class discovered, Oobleck does NOT follow those rules. It can act as both a solid and a liquid. Technically speaking, Oobleck is a suspension, meaning that the grains of starch are not dissolved, they are just suspended and spread out in the water. When pressure is applied, the Oobleck acts like a solid. When you pour the Oobleck, it acts like a liquid. The class must have enjoyed the lab today because they all thanked me when it was over! They also wanted to take the Oobleck home... Sorry parents...
