Today in STEM the 5th-8th graders started a five week challenge. A team of explorers is trapped near the arctic circle and need help in order to survive. Today's challenge was to build an igloo that would provide shelter from the harsh cold. Given only marshmallows and tooth picks, the groups needed to create a solid structure with an opening for a door. The tallest, widest, and most solid structure would win. Mrs. Dominowski came in to judge the challenge and pick a winner!

In 7/8th grade science today the students were exploring pendulums. They had three different tasks to explore. They were testing the height of the drop, the length of the string, and the mass of the bob. With each experiment they needed to make a hypothesis and then execute the experiment by following the procedure given to them. Skills they were working on included recording data correctly in tables, working together in groups, communication skills, and the scientific method.
In STEM today the 5th-8th graders needed to design and construct a tool that would help them carry a cup of water to the drinking fountain and dump it out. The students were not allowed to touch the full cup of water with their hands. Only the designed contraption could touch the cup. During the testing phase, there were some successes, some failures, and a lot of redesigning to reach the goal!
