The 7/8th grade participated in an egg drop experiment this week in science. The goal was to build a protective device for the egg that would keep it intact when Mrs. Hemme went up in the lift and dropped it from the gym ceiling. Two groups were successful and two groups were not. The class even got out their cell phones and recorded the drops in slow motion so they could watch the impact. It was a fun activity that took engineering skills and a creativity.

This week the 5/6th grade finished up their unit on ecosystems by looking at owl pellets. Owl pellets are regurgitated masses of fur, bones, and other items that an owl can not digest. Owls "spit up" 1 to 2 pellets per day. The class dissected some pellets to investigate the diet of barn owls. They were able to identify what barn owls eat and draw out food chains based on their findings. The class had fun and many students took home a bag of collected bones.
This week the 5/6th graders created terrarium/aquariums as a part of their unit on ecosystems. Each mini ecosystem had live aquatic plants and fish. The top portion had potting soil and seeds. The class is very excited to have a "class pet," and are working hard to take care of them.
