On Wednesday the Delta College STEM Explorer came to visit the 5th-8th graders. To prepare for the visit, the students spent several hours on Monday creating parachutes. They watched some demonstrations and then researched parachute designs online. Each group then created 3 different designs to launch during Wednesdays visit. When the STEM Explorer came, the students were split into two groups. One group started in the field by testing and launching their parachutes using pressurized air cannons. The second group started on the bus exploring many different STEM activities. After about 45 minutes they switched. The classes even had time to try out hands only CPR and AED training. It was a great visit and the Delta leaders who led the activities said they were impressed with how well behaved the students were. They even said this was the most successful parachute launch they have ever had. If you haven't done so already, check out the school Facebook page. There are some great videos of the visit! Today the students had the opportunity to show off their bridge building skills. They were tasked with building a bridge that would hold Sir Harley Houndstooth III for 30 seconds. Each group was given a limited number of gum drops and toothpicks to complete this challenge.
